CHRISTMAS

The Christmas Holiday is supposed to honor the birth of Jesus. It's not intended to be a contest of who can spend the most money for material goods that will soon be set aside and forgotton. Instead, it should be for, as Jesus said, to feed the hungry and heal the sick. In the USA, and many other countries, there are multitudes that are malnourished and sick at heart. This is a condition that demonstrates the evil that men do, and the opportunity to do good that too often is set aside and forgotten.
Let us remember that the Government is our representative and the doer of our will. Let us direct our government to concentrate on careing for the hungry, the poor, and the sick at heart. Let us direct our Government to cease making war, and in so doing, honor the Prince of Peace.Only in that way will we escape the evil that men do and enter into the kingdom of the good that can be done. I believe this would honor the birth of Jesus, and the lives of the many who did their best to be teachers of goodness.

Wayne LaPierre, the head goon of the NRA is making the rounds of the news programs trying to justify murder and mayhem. NRA atands for Not Really American. Can you imagine if a majority of citizens carried a handgun with them whenever they were out in public, how many gun deaths there would be? It would make the old GUNSMOKE tv western seem like kindergarden.
Unfortunatly, many people have a shoot first, ask questions later mentality. If they were armed and out in public, imagine the carnage.
How many children must be killed, before common sense takes hold? Or should we take the Ebenezer Scrooge attiude that it "reduces the surplus population"?
In closing, let me say that I'm not opposed to gun ownership. Only irresponsible gun ownership.

PEACE

There have been suggestions that schools should have armed guards on duty. Are we talking about schools attended by little children? Are schools to be like prisons with guards carrying rifles and pistols? What a terrible environment for children. As they mature, will they have a vision of the world as an armed camp with danger around every corner?

Will this situation promote peace and safety? I think not. Just as more vehicles on the highway mean more accidents and death, more guns in public mean more shootings and overflowing mortuarys.

In this time of celebrating the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, let us do much more to promote peace and safety for all people.

CONGRESS?

I propose to change the name of the Congress of the United States to the Regress of the United States. More and more, it seems that their policies are  regressive rather than progressive. Has the transmission of the vehicle of government gone haywire and only has two gears left? Neutral and Reverse? Is it time for the ELECTORAL TRANSMISSION REPAIR COMPANY, aka the votors, to take over and do the overhaul? Lots of defective "parts" to replace.

Maybe the time has come.

GIVE ME A BREAK! This makes about as much sense as a $1.45 fine for driving 100 mph in a school zone. Is this what our 'regulators" consider to be an adequate fine for egrigious violations of laws that are supposed to protect the health and well being of both workers and the general public? A fine for law violation should hurt! This is just a chuckle for the Chevron board members as they sign the check to pay the fine.

The Right to Bear Arms

The Constitution of the United States says:

The Supreme Court of the United States, in it's infinite wisdom decided a "militia" could be as small as one private citizen with a gun. What chance do we, as innocent private citizens have against the power of a government that decides we are fair game for target practice by looney gun owners?

I'm not saying all guns should be banned. What I am saying is that high powered rapid firing guns should be strictly regulated, and not allowed to fall into the hands of ordinary citizens. The founders of our country and the writers of the Constitution had no way to forsee the advances of firearm technology. I'm sure they would be aghast at the slaughter perpetrated by one deranged individual armed by a military style weapon.

Mitt Romney and Mrs. Romney went to the Paciaio-Marquez fight in Las Vegas the other night. Before the fight, Mitt fawned all over Pacciaio in a tv interview. The Pacman got ko'ed in the 6th round, much like the Mittman got ko'ed in the Presidential election. When the Pacman saw the Mittman approaching, he should have fled the scene. Bad luck hangs over the Mittman like stink hangs over the cattle farm. Poor Pacman failed in his quest much like the Mittman failed in the election. Two losers. How sad.

FISCAL CLIFF

I suspect that the Repubbys want us to fall off  the fiscal cliff. The economy would be wrecked and the R's could blame the D's.
The R's would use this in the next Presidential election, presumably against Hillary Clinton, the expected Demo nominee. I'm sure the R's are terrified of the prospect that Hillary will be elected in 2016. As usual, the desperate will stop at nothing to get their way. Beware of Mitt the Twit, the Devil in disguise.

CANCER CURE?

I watched some of a tv program on cancer, and the possibility of a cure. It seems that huge amounts of money will be necessary to fund the research necessary to understand the problem and rid us of the problem.
Here's a suggestion on how to fund the research: STOP FIGHTING STUPID WARS!!!!!!
Try to imagine the money that would be available if the billions and billions of dollars spent on the Vietnam war had been made available to medical research insteat of being spent killing millions of poor people.

WHEN WILL WE EVER LEARN?

I will always remember the afternoon of December 7, 1941. My brother and I were sitting in our Dad's red 1941 Ford 4 door sedan listening to music on the radio. The program was interrupted to announce the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan. I was only 8 years old, but I knew something terrible had happened. Everything changed on that day.

TWO PARTY GOVERNMENT

The Republican Party is becoming a pathetic shadow of what it was in the days of Thomas Dewey, Dwight Eisenhower, and even the morally flawed Richard Nixon. As a Democrat, I view this with a certain amount of glee, even though I realize that the 2 party system cannot continue to function properly under the shadow of political decay.

We need two strong political partys to provide a competetive balance to the system of two party elective government. If one party becomes too strong and smothers the other party into non-competitive existence, our democracy could be in danger.

We need the debate, and the voters to decide who won the debate, and therefore will become the governing party.

I bought my house at 284 Sequoia Ave. over 40 years ago. It was a nice and quiet street then. Not so now. There are buses roaring by at all hours of the day and night. Is this to be permanent? I certainly hope not. Sequoia Ave. was not meant for this kind of traffic. The street will be damaged and need repaving long before it should be necessary. I hope you can do something about this noisy nuisance, and peace and quiet will return to my street. Thanks.

I see advertisements for "clean coal". Is this the untimate oxymoron? Would only a moron believe coal is clean? Coal may be necessary as part of our energy supply, but clean it's not. I speak as one who is afflicted with asthma and COPD. Burning coal will not help me, or millions of others similarly afflicted.

Daly City burst water line.

Cast Iron Pipe
  I was surprised to hear that the water pipe in Daly City that burst and caused so much damage was made of cast iron. How foolish. Cast iron pipe should never be used in a high pressure/high stress situation.
  How do I know this? For many years I worked in the elevator trade, and many of the elevators were oil hydraulic. The code is very specific concerning this. NO cast iron pipe. Only steel pipe of a high specification is permitted. This code should be the same for all high pressure water lines. If this had been the case in the Daly City water line, there would have been no disaster.
  So, all you folks that write specifications and award contracts, cheap is not the way to go. It will come back to bite you.

I was born in April 1933. Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office for his first term in March of 1933. I grew up with Roosevelt and remember his leadership during WW2 along with Winston Churchill, the  Prime Minister of England. Two great men.

Now I am 79 years old, and am facing the prospect of Romney and Ryan as President and vicePresident. The contrast between these two and Roosevelt/Churchill is beyond imagination. Is this the downhill run for the USA which will end in the pit of dispair?

My fellow Americans, please consider the Devil that is inherent in the Romney/Ryan persona and vote to keep them as far from the White House as is possible. It may be our salvation.

Give bicyclists their own car

I agree with the comments of Peter Lawrence, "How to match BART and bikes" (Letter, Aug. 3). Bike riders are not allowed in the first car, but they ignore this, the same as they ignore advice not to enter crowded cars and ignore the "no bike" rule during commute hours.



By all means, bring in bike-only cars. With regard to airport passengers, who think that they can block up to four seats, yes, bring in separate cars.

Commuting is a real challenge

I had to laugh at the letter saying that commuting by bike in San Francisco doesn't require fitness or bravery ("Taking the edge off biking in the city," Letters, Insight, Aug. 5).



In truth it's arduous and/or dangerous. There are the numerous hills to wind around, most streets are only two lanes wide with parked cars on both sides, the few arterials are jammed with traffic, with cars making right turns right across the path of bikes, and there's the pedestrians who blindly dart into your path. Only the fit, the brave, and the few will ever commute by bike in the city. I never have, and I've been riding my bike for recreation here for 45 years.

No pension reform - no tax increase

Until the governor and Legislature step up and enact meaningful statewide pension reform ("Pension reform the top priority," Aug. 6), this registered Democrat will not support either Gov. Jerry Brown's Proposition 30 or tax proponent Molly Munger's Prop. 38 in November.



Without legislative action soon on this subject, voters in California are in a mood to "speak" with another Prop. 13, this time directed at pension reform.



This is not the way good government should work, but it is the voters' only recourse when the governor and the legislature are afraid to go up against the powerful unions that support them so generously. Tax increase proposals must be accompanied by pension reform.

The writer of "Our archbishop" (Letters, Aug. 4) seems perplexed why anyone might not welcome the appointment of Salvatore Cordileone as the new archbishop since, as she puts it, "no one is held hostage" to the Roman Catholic Church's teachings.



I wish to remind her that the church makes it a practice to try to hold both Catholics and non-Catholics alike hostage by influencing legislation.



If the church would keep its nose out of politics and stop trying to impose its teachings on those who don't adhere to its particular brand of faith, I wouldn't care one whit who does or doesn't get appointed to its hierarchies.

I find it remarkable that Oakland Mayor Jean Quan thinks the police ganged up on her for booting her car when she had over $1,000 of parking tickets prior to becoming mayor ("Quan denies implying police setup," Aug. 4).



How much illegal parking do you have to do to rack up that many fines? I'm sure she can park anywhere she wants now in Oakland without getting a ticket, but did she really believe she had some special lawbreaking privilege before becoming mayor?

Speaking as a retired union elevator mechanic, and a staunch Democrat, I can't critisize Mitt Romney for building a garage with a car elevator. I would like to know if it was built by members of the International Union of Elevator Constructors, or was it built by scabs? Which is it Mitt? An election with 60 percent voter turnout is considered good. I say that democracy is a gift from our forefathers, and those that don't vote are traitors to the gift of freedom and the duty to vote. SAME SEX MARRIAGE

Election time. Campaigns are heating up. Gay and lesbian equality is being discussed. Should they have the same marriage rights as straight folks?  Some say that would be "un-Christian". I ask you, what has Jesus to do with this question? He didn't marry. Why not, you may ask. To that I reply, his lack of a marriage relationship is none of your damn business. As the old saying goes: "Methinks thou doth protest too much.".

Verily I say unto you, any 2 people that want to enter into a loving and committed relationship should do so, and to hell with the nay-sayers. And, legal rights {rites} should apply to all.

Many years ago, my friend Warren Clark and I (both of us straight) were discussing the issue of gay and lesbian  marriage rights, or lack thereof. Lots of yak, but no agreement until I played my trump card. To Warren I said, "Look at it this way. They won't reproduce in a gay marriage. If a gay person is forced into a straight marriage, and does reproduce, the genetic factor goes on and on." In his mind, the light went on, and he began to understand.

More people need to open their minds and let the light shine in. Maybe civilization would become more civilized.

THE DIRTY R WORD

Why are the Repubbys in such an uproar over Obama? Two reasons. Reason one: Obama is a Democrat.
Reason two: Obama is an "N" word. They are just devastated by this combination. It goes against all that they hold dear and holy.

A pox upon them. I remember Republicans that Denocrats could respect and admire above and beyond the political differences. Such as Dwight Eisenhower.

I have a difficult time understanding why the Republicans tout Christianity so such an extent. To me they exemplify asll that is anti Jesus. the "Prince of Peace".

Mitt Romney better called Mutt Rummy, the dog on the roof. Mutt has a problem with gay people. Imagine what he would do to a gay dog. Is a gay dog a rummy mutt? What is it with Mitt? "Methinks he doth protest too much".

I hear on both domestic and international news lots of yak about UNEMPLOYMENT, This seems to be a problem in all the industrialized nations. Politicians not part of the current governments always blame the incumbents for not doing enough to alleviate the problem. It's time to face the truh. There are TOO MANY PEOPLE on this Earth. The many economic systems around the globe are unable to provide for the overpopulation. You can't "squeeze blood from a turnip". Do you suppose that if much less money was spent on war, and used instead to provide necesary nutrition, housing, and medical care, our world would be a much better place?

If there was to be a grand prize for Grace in Design and Engineering, it would have to go to the GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE. Presidential Term

Once again, it's time to consider amemding the Constitution concerning Presidential term limits. My vote is for one 6 year term. Under the current 4 year system, the President spends the first 2 years learning the job, and the next 2 years running for re-election.

One more benefit. The grandiose hoopla of Presicential elections would be considerably reduced.

Mitt "Rumdum" Romney is totally out of touch to the point of making stupid statements concerning foreigh policy. He has stated that Russia is our number one enemy. Is this man an idiot or what? Has he arisn from the excrement of Barry Goldwater? Or dirty Dicky Nixon? What a horrible prospect that this idiot could become President of the United States. Wake up voters. Social Security

The Social Security Program was created in 1935 to provide old age, survivors, and disability insurance benefits to workers and their families. This was one of the great achievements of the Roosevelt administration. The "conservatives" fought it tooth and nail, calling it "communism" Now, they all line up to collect the benefits.
The fight is now over what is called "Obamacare" in the Supreme Court hearing. The rightwing is doing their best to have it declared unconstitutional. If they succeed, will the next step be to go after Social Security?
All senior citizens better watch closely what the far right is up to. If you suffer in silence, you will die in silence. The fight is on. You had better join in.

HEALTH CARE

All the folks that are so opposed to government assistance with health care costs should be allowed to opt out. It should be made very clear that if they do opt out and become ill and can't pay the bill, then they die. No help from the government. I heard some "experts" discussing Afghanistan and is there any chance of success there. Some think the chance of improvement is slim to none and we should get out. The tv news comes up with some amazing stories. Thieves are stealing great quantities of Tide detergent for resale or barter. Dirty crooks! Or are they clean crooks? Will this wave of crime cause the crooks to be swept away by the Tide? Or will they come clean and be detered from detergent theft? Watch as this story bubbles up with more details.

The Russians must be laughing at us because of our "mission" in Afghanistan. They had sense enough to realize it was a hopeless quest. They left. Our government in a fit of utter stupidity invaded Afghanistan. Evil begets evil. A United States soldier murdered 16 or more innocent Afghan civilians. Shot them down in cold blood. He should be tried and convicted. Then hanged by his neck in a public square in Kabul, or one of the major Afghan cities. He showed no mercy. He deserves no mercy.

DISGRACE

A United States soldier has brought disgrace upon his country and the Army of his country by killing 16 people in Afghanistan. He should be hanged by the neck until dead. Then we should get out of Afghanistan and never return. Some soldiers of this country have made us look like evil conquerers such as the Nazis of Hitler. This is pure evil. What are we coming to? I deeply resent being made to feel ashamed by some members or our armed forces.
I know that behavior such as this is not unusual, nor has it ever been. I spent a year and 1/2 in the 1950's in the Far East as a member of the USAF. I saw some bad behavior then, and was deeply ashamed that my fellow countrymen would act in such a reprehensible manner

Rational Thought

Religion often prevents rational thought concerning temporal matters. Often it leads to irrational conflicts and wars that rarely come to a good end. We need leaders that are able to THINK. Some of the rightys that are running for President don't seem to have this ability. An itchy finger on the nuclear trigger could lead to the end of the world. There is no heaven. There is no hell. Only the hell of firey conflagration signaling a man made end of time.
We have a President capable of rational and intelligent thought. Don't replace him with a nutcase.

American lives are being lost in Afghanistan. To what end? For what purpose? If there is a rational end and a reasonable purpose, are we the citizens unaware of it because our government is incompetant?

HEALTHCARE FOR ALL

I am fortunate to have a retirenent medical plan that I pay into monthly, and Medicare combined with Kaiser Permanente pretty well covers my needs. I have asthama and COPD, {chronic obstructive pulmonary disease} which requires daily oxygen treatments. Kaiser delivered, and Medicare pays for an oxygen generator for me to use 2 or 3 times a day, or as needed.
To the rightwingers who oppose government aid to medical care, I say "to hell with you bastards!" I worked and paid taxes for most of my life. I behaved myself and am a loyal citizen. Why shouldn't I, and my fellow citizens get a share of the pie? Why should the military-industrial complex" {D.D.Eisenhower} get the lions share? They just start wars to justify themselves.
