Elon Musk is a visionary thinker who someday may be thought of in the same category as Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. His idea for a high speed tube from Northern California to the Los Angeles is a concept difficult to imagine ever coming to fruition, as were the ideas of Ford and Edison. However, their ideas did spring from the drawing board to reality and we are much the better for it. I suggest that the Southern California terminus be Disneyland. Walt Disney was another visionary genius who would have had great appreciation for the mind of Mr. Musk. If Walt was still alive, I believe that he would be a primary backer for the high speed tube. Genius plus genius equals a great new world. Carry on, Elon!

 I think it's possible to use a word until it looses much of it's power. This old HONKY grew up in the South. If I said "Nigger", my Mother would wash my mouth out with soap. We had a young black woman working as a maid and caretaker of me and my younger brother. She made me angry one day and I called her a nigger. She said in return, "just wait 'til your mother comes home". I was terrified. I knew that I had a whipping coming with a switch from a gnarly bush in the yard.  Lucky for me, she didn't tell mother, and I went out of my way to be nice to her from that day on.
One additional memory. The time frame is in the mid 1940"s. Mother, Dad, my brother and I went to visit her at her home one day. Her home was a log cabin in the woods west of Salem, VA. Truly! No electricity or running water. Candles at night. A bucket in the well for water. This was about 68 years ago. I can still visualize it.

SEI BOKU BONSAI KAI ANNUAL EXHIBIT

Is it over the top to say our 2013 annual bonsai show was the best we have ever done? I think not. I've been involved in every SBBK event since the founding of the club, and this exhibit in all respects was one that will remain in my memory for a very long time. My hearty congratulations to all participants.

Thanks to the members who were there for the setup. I think it went very well, and was a good example of hard work and cooperation by all involved.
I don't believe that I've ever seen so many bonsai brought to the Friday evening setup. Several tables were crowded with trees ready to show. A feast for the eyes.
Thanks and congratulations to Valerie and Gordon for their artistic placing of the trees. It was done with love and care and attention to detail. This is what makes a successful exhibit. I can still see it in my mind's eye, and the memory will linger for some time.
Thanks to Dave DeGroot for his demonstrations and exhibit critique. His presentations showed a mastery of the art of bonsai and a refined ability to teach and explain.
Once again, thanks to all. Ya done good!!

INFRASTRUCTURE MAINTENANCE

The managment class hates to spend money on infrastructure repair and maintenance. How do I know this? I spent 20 years of my life working on essential mechanical-electrical equipment for a government agency. The most difficult part of the job was not  maintenance, repair and trouble-shooting the equipment. The greatest difficulty was convincing managment to provide funds for the maintenance and repair of the equipment. These folks would much prefer to build themselves bigger and fancier offices than to "waste" taxpayers money on important equipment.

TORNADO

The Oklahoma tornado is a message to all people. We must stop sending our military might to other countries, and concentrate our power to making our country safer from the terrible forces of nature that can attack and cause great damage and loss of life. Why can't we have the power of our military ready to move into disaster areas and provide assistance to the battered people who are suffering the blast of nature? The time has come. The time is here. A universe of complexity, disguised as simplicity

A bunjin bonsai should embody the elegance of simplicity, and the simplicity of true grace. Is this attainable? Are we mortals capable? Should we even try? I believe that we should. Will we succeed? We may not know.
I truly believe that bunjin bonsai reflects the artistic philosophy of “less is more” to a degree far treater than any other style of bonsai. However,the distillation of the philosophy to a work of bonsai art may be a difficult path to travel.
As we travel this path to bonsai nirvana, the destination may be just around the next turn. Or maybe its over the top of the next hill. But there is always another turn in the road and one more hill to climb in the unending journey.

Dear Jackie

My wife and I took 2 legal firearms to the North County Courthouse this morning. We got in line and waited and waited and waited. After an hour and 1/2 we had to leave without being able to drop off the firearms. I'm 80 years old, and my bladder was about to explode, I'm lucky that my house is near the Courthouse, and I made it home in time.
I understand that the holdup was due to all the paperwork that had to be filled out. We were led to believe that it would just be a simple dropoff, not a bunch of paperwork. There must be a better way,

MURDER IN TEXAS

Government officals in the State of Texas are being murdered.  Is this the beginnning of a revolution? Are the local Nazi party members going to ressurect a new version of Adolf Hitler to make war on the USA? This is treason, and the perpetrators should be rounded up. given a military trial, lined up and shot.

I am 80 years old, and a gun owner since I was a boy. I just listened to President Obama make a speech about RATIONAL gun control.

Will there ever be rational control of firearms? I find it hard to understand why there are more stringent regulations concerning owning and driving an automobile than there are about guns.

Back to owning and driving an automoble. There are laws concerning proper maintenance and insurance for the automobile. Why can't there be innsurance requirements for guns? It would provide care and compensation for those wounded, or the families of those wounded or killed by a firearm.

I opened my Chronicle this morning and was immediately struck by the front page image of the Lafayette crosses. My daughter lives near the site and when I visit her I pass by the Memorial. I'm 80 years old, and it seems that all my life there has been one war after another. When will we ever learn?

Many years ago, I had 2 friends at work who had a great deal of expertise in the areas of auto mechanics and electrical theory. My expertise was in the area of elevator mechanics and electrical troubleshooting.
Our discussions concerning the future of the automobile led to a system very similar to the current Tesla engine.
We expected the internal combustion engine to die hard, and our expectation has proved to be correct. However, that day is coming thanks to you and your belief in a better automotive future.

Will we then have proof that all PEOPLE are created equal and can aspire to and gain high position, fame, and the love and respect of ther fellow citizens?

Hooray for President Obama and his gun control speech this morning.

I am a lifetime gun owner. However, I do not worship at the alter of the NRA.

Guns should be registered and controlled by competent authority, just as moter vehicles are. I'm not allowed to drive without a license. Why should I be allowed to fire a weapon without proof of competency?

It is the responsiblity of government to protect citizens both from themselves, and from the "evil that men do"
