BOOK BURNING

The written word is one of the foundations of civilization. From the earliest times, the authors, prophets, and seers have codified the wisdom of their time for all of us to benefit from. All this thought, knowledge and history is in books and preserved in our libraries for the benefit of all generations.
A fool who claims to be a "man of God" proposes to burn copies of the Quran. If there si a Hell as is claimed by the theologians, this evil person should suffer the same fate as he wishes to befall the Quran.

Further thought on book burning.
A book is only paper with printing on it. If it should happen to be burned, or destroyed by some other means, the intelligense and principles contained therein are not lost. It is foolish,crude and stupid to try to make a point by burning a book. The burner only shows gross stupidity.
Principle will live on in spite of fools and charletans.

THE GREAT LEAK

Of course, all the rightys will complain about how long it took Obama to plug the leak. When if first happened, a lot of supposedly smart people were saying why doesn't he do this and order that and blah to the nth power. People that are smart were saying dumb things. For instance, I heard Chris Matthews say something to the effect, why doesn't the Navy send a sub down there, blah. blah. The truth is it would have been crushed like a soda can stepped on by an elephant, and he should know that. The pressure a mile under water is beyond belief. The oil industry should have been ready for a disaster such as this, but not being required to, why bother? The feds were always looking the other way with eyes closed.
Another thing amazing to me. Proposals to stop deep water drilling in the Gulf are opposed by many people down there. Drilling will continue, but extreme safety measures must be put in place and rigidly enforced.
Wind and solar power must be pushed harder and harder. The less oil we need, the cleaner and safer the environment will be.

There sre some that are seriously proposing to send a nuclear device doen to the gulf oil leak, with the belief that the explosion will seal the well.

Suppose instead of sealing the leak, it opens it up more, and a huge flood of oil gushes upward, dwarfing the current leak?

Worse yet, the oil may be radioactive,and spread around the world's oceans.

The Worst Things

I've been thinking of the worst things to happen to my country in my lifetime which started in 1933, the GREAT DEPRESSION.

After the depression, there were the wars. WW2. Korea. Vietnam. The 2 stupid wars we are involved in now.

Lesve out the wars and the Great Depression,the worst thing is easy. THE GULF OIL DISASTER!! As bad as it is today, it will get much worse before it gets better. How do I knoe this? Because, it's obvious that the powers that be do not know what to do. It is an unprecedented situation, and there are no books to read to learn the cure. I'm sure that all the sanctimonious fools will be frantically looking in the Bible, crying for answers, and praying for deliverance.

We may look back on today and know it was the best of times compared to where we are. It seems that there is no expert that has the answer. If the relief drilling fails, this well could spew oil until all the oceans of the world are polluted by the fruit of human greed.

I like James Carville. He is a hoot. I sympathize with his obvious great distress over the tragedy of the Gulf. He is outraged over his perception of government response to the oil disaster.
HOWEVER!

THE WAY IT IS

The oil companies have been in part ownership of the United States Government for generations. It's a stranglehold that will be difficult to break. If the Gulf spill brings this about, there will be some good that comes from the monstrous evil that has been done to the waters and shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
I believe that the United States Government should seize all BP assets that are located on U.S. territory. Take full control of these assets and hold them until ALL claims are settled, and there has been full remediation of all financial and environmental damages.

I often wonder about some of the folks that characterize themselves as "libertarian".
Sometimes they seem close to crossing the line to anarchism. The current darling of the right, Rand Paul, winner of the Kentucky Republican senatorial primary may be one of these. Those of his ilk seem to hold a hatred of government, especially a government that guarantees certain liberties to all people, especially those that are perceived to be of a lesser class. However much they claim to hate the principles that good government espouses, they love to gain public office and enjoy the priviledges, perquisites, and power of the office.
Interesting that the given name "Rand" is the surname of the famous author Ayn Rand, the goddess of the far right. I doubt that this is a coincidence.

I was asked if I was surprised by the outcome of the Sestak/Spector Senatorial primary in Pennsylvania. I replied:
"No, I don't think so. A turncoat often leaves people with a bad taste, even if he has supposedly turned your way. There's always the chance the turncoat turns again.
Interesting to see the big margin Specter started out with. Then you could see Sestak catching up at a rate that looked like a winner. Joe should have it made in the general."
Congratulatios to Joe Sestak. He's partway on his journey to be a senator. I believe that he will be able to handle the general election without serious problems. He's a smart man, has served his country well, and will continue to serve.

IMMIGRATION

There's a huge brouhaha in Arizona about illegal immigration. I'm a child of illegal immigration. Sometime around 1635 my ancestors on my mother's side of the family came from England and settled in what is now New Milford Conn. They stole land from the citizens of the country they settled,and eventually these citizens were driven out and ended up on reservations. Maybe you could say concentration camps.
Jesus said, "Let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone". All we who are TOTALLY INNOCENT may cast stones at the immigrants.
Again, we are back to stupid wars. If not for that, we would have money to both control the borders, and provide help to the poor Mexicans who have little recourse but to cross the border to find work and sustenance for their families. What more noble undertaking is there than to feed the children? Agsin I must remind the so-called "Christians" that Jesus also said, "Suffer the little children to come unto me".

Friday. The Arizona governor signed the bill and it is now law. What a sorry STATE of affairs. That's what I said. Arizona is a sorry state.

There is a stain of shame on the State of Virginia. They want to dedicate the Month of April to celebrate the Confederacy.
I grew up in small town in Virginia from about 1935 to 1948. They were still "fighting" the Civil War back in those days. I would have hoped that they would be over that by now, more than 60 years later. It seems not.
Shame upon the Republicans. It seems that there is no depth to which they will not sink.

The awful coal mine tragedy in West Virginia made me think back to my young days when John L Lewis was head of the mine workers union and labored mightily to improve the horrible conditions that mine workers suffered under.
John L Lewis was hated by the rightwing and the business community as a charlatan who was out to steal their money and give it to the poor white trash who labored in the mines under the most dangerous conditions imaginable.
John L Lewis was a workingman's hero, and deserves sainthood for his efforts to improve the working conditions of the poor people who labored under the lash of uncareing management.
I worked for a number of years in the construction industry and remember difficult conditions. It was NOTHING compared to the what the mine workers suffered.

It sounds like the Senators, especially Republicans are beating up on Sec. LaHood, the head of transportation safety. I'm quite certain that if before this Toyota schlamozzle came about, the Democrats were to have proposed tougher safety regulations on the auto makers, the Republicans would have hollered about unfair government interference in private industry.

Mr Deming is, more than anyone, responsible for production methods and quality control in post WW2 Japanese industry. Viewed in the light of the current Toyota schlemozzle it seems that maybe his influence has diminished to a level reminicent of GM quality control in the 1970's-1980's.

I'm sure this is good news for Ford, GM etc. whose quality, it is said, is greatly improved. Still, it's a shame to see an iconic name like Toyota sink in the swamp of poor design and lack of quality.

The Supreme Court far rightists have dealt a body blow to democracy with this evil decision to sell the country to the big corporations.The little people will become the fire hydrants for the big dog corporations. Before this decision there was some question as to how bad the Democrats House and Senate losses would be in 2010. I don't see any question now, unless by some miracle the voters get smart and vote against the corporate candidates.
Voters getting smart is a long shot.

The Obama critics are howling and wailing that he hasn't fired anyone in the wake of the Christmas Day aircraft bombing attempt. It has occurred to me that there may be a perverse logic in this. To illustrate: If certain people are fired and blame is heaped upon them, those remaining may believe they are home free and it's back to business as usual. If no one is fired, each should be thinking "would it have been me to be fired?" "I will work harder. I will pay closer attention. I will do my job to the best of my ability and try to assure that my compatriots do the same."

President Obama is a very bright and clever man. Don't underestimate him.

The Republicans are falling all over themselves to blame Obama and the Dems for the Christmas Day terror event. No one died, and the perp is locked up, probably for the rest of his life. The Republicans are praying for a disaster to occur. They would like to forget that the worst disaster to occur on our soil since Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941, was on their watch when 3000 died in New York City on 9/11. They had been warned. They ignored the warning. They are covered with shame. They are a disgrace.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the esteemed Governor of the Great State of California gave his swan song speech to the legislature yesterday. In spite of the lousy economy, the budget shortfalls and hard times in general, the Gov has ambitions. It reminded me of a saying my grandmother used back in the days of the Great Depression and World War 2 when I would complain about not having all I thought I should have.

COURAGE

Today is January the 1st, 2010. The Festival of Roses parade is on television. Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger is the Grand Marshall riding in an antique automobile.

Occasionally there comes along a genuine hero. One who rises far above the usual charlatens, thieves and ner-do-wells that fill the print and electronic media.

I believe that Sully is a man who would say he was just doing his job. And he was. But, unlike the majority, Sully did his job in an extraordinary manner, bringing together bravery and devotion to duty and taking them to a great height.

Ernest Hemingway defined courage as "Grace under pressure". This is perfect for Sully. After his masterful landing in the Hudson River, the safe evacuation of all the passengers and crew, as the aircraft was sinking into the frigid water of the Hudson, Captain Sullenberger went back into the cabin and walked all the way to the back to be sure that there were no passengers left. This is indeed, "GRACE UNDER PRESSURE".
