Rep. Barney Frank questioned the auto executives today concerning the health care costs for their companies. It seems that the costs over time are up in the range of 34 billion bucks. It logically led into the benefit to the industry of the US having national health care to reduce operating cost, not only for them but for all business.

The rightwingers on the panel looked like they had just swallowed something extremely unpleasant.

What I have to say to congressjerks is this: You have the best healthcare that money (taxpayers) can buy. Do you think the rest of us are just doggy doo-doo and deserve far less than you? You should be cut off from benefits forthwith and until you do your job for all the people and not just grossly overpaid auto execs.

Citizens in most prosperous countries around the world have health care provided by the government, or as some say, "socialized medicine". That is one of the reasons that products made in those countries and exported to the US cost less than the same product made in the US.

We must nationalize health care. Otherwise, we fail.

I'm watching on tv news, the "big three" automobile executives. hat in hand, begging for taxpayer money to save their companies from failure and demise. It's not their fault, you know. They manufactured products that the man in the street wanted. Or so they say.

They could have done better. They should have done better. To survive from now on, they must do better.

My memory took me back to the days when I worked in the construction trade. Economic conditions would deteriorate, available jobs would decline, and inevitably layoffs would occur.

In the front of my mind, I could rationalize my situation by blaming the economy. In the back of my mind lurked the thought that if only I had done better at my job, maybe I would still be working, and someone else would be down and out. I believe that this also applies to the car makers. If only they had done better, they wouldn't be groveling before Congress and begging for help.

For as long as I can remember, the Republicans have called the Democrats, "the party of tax and spend". Much to our economic distress, the Republicans, who have been in power for the past 8 years have been "the party of don't tax, but spend anyway". Now, as a result of this foolishness, the economy is out of whack, the public debt is of astronomical proportions, and growing rapidly with every multi-billion "bailout".

California governor Arnold "Terminator" Schwarznegger says the state government is in great economic distress and has signed a declaration of emergency. Well Arnold, you have been a willing part of the "don't tax, but spend anyway" gang of economic lame-brains, and now you are looking for a bailout to save you and your ilk from bankruptcy. I'll bet your mother taught you better, but you forgot the lesson.

STUDS TERKEL, RIP

Studs Terkel, author and great American died on Friday at the age of 96. Studs was the historian of common man. He went out and talked to ordinary people about their experiences, and the hardships they suffered in the Great Depression. He talked to ordinary people about their jobs and how difficult it could be to keep the job and pay the rent.

I read most of his books many years ago. I should go through my library, find the books and re-read them.

To all Americans: Read Studs' books. You will gain a better understanding of what we have been through, and what we may go through in the near future, especially the economic future.

Studs, you may be gone, but surely not forgotten.

EXPERIENCE?

The Repubbys are hammering Obama for "lack of experience". Experience may not be all it's cracked up to be. For instance, what good is it if you don't know how to make use of it in a smart way?

I've spent many years in the workplace. In all those years, I've known and worked with people with lot's of "experience". Out of all those people, there were many whose experience served them well, and was an important aid in their ability to do a good job, and help others. They had knowledge and judgement.

On the other hand, I have known many people with years on the job who, to put it bluntly, couldn't find their ass with both hands. They could tell you when it was quitting time and when it was payday, but don't ask for more.

Obama may not have all the years of "experience" that his opponent has. However, he has brains and judgement, He has the rare ability to take in and analyze vast amounts of facts and data, and the judgement to act rationally based on his judgement.

I'm convinced that Obama has the potential to be a great President. I pray that I am right. We are in so much trouble.

Go door to door asking for help? Become desperate and steal food or money to care for my children? Get locked up, while my family is thrown out on the street?

I remember poor people going door to door begging food back in the depression before World War 2. We were fortunate. Dad's business brought in sufficient income, and we had enough property in a small Virginia town to have a large garden and chickens. We never went without the necessities. Mother fed many people who knocked on the door, hungry and raggedy.

The incompetance of our government and the greed of the Wall Streeters have brought us to the precipice of depression.

A very important characteristic of a candidate for President of the United States should be sound judgement, a trait very much lacking over the past 8 years.

One of the two candidates in this upcoming election has shown exceedingly poor judgement on his most important "presidential" decision so far. I hear many talking heads on the tube referring to the current economic crisis as the worst since the GREAT DEPRESSION.

When the crash of 1929 occured, there were 2 major differences between then and now, In 1929 there wasn't a foolish war that has run up a debt that is beyond comprehension. That may make 2008 worse than 1929.

The Republicans, once self styled as the party of fiscal responsibility has over the past 8 years gone totally bonkers. They behave like a drunk gambler in a crooked casino.

They've been playing poker with the economy and losing every pot. On election day, lets hope they are holding the "dead man's hand", and the "marshall" drags them feet first out the door and up to "Boot Hill".

I understand that most vote for their perceived self-interest. This is the normal way.

For instance, the Republican mantra is NO NEW TAXES. That attracts many voters.

What has happened today in the financial markets, and in the past few months in the subprime mortgage mess should give Republicans pause to ponder the fact that the "don't tax but spend anyway" crowd that has so terribly mismanaged the country and the economy, that the worst financial horror since the GREAT DEPRESSION has afflicted us, and huge amounts of wealth have vanished.

We are in a "Through the looking glass" (apologies to Lewis Carroll) situation where nothing is ever what it seems, or what you believe you see, or what you are told you see. I live in San Mateo County, California, a prosperous and in many areas a wealthy county. We are situated between San Francisco, and Santa Clara County, home of the highest of high tech.

Here's the story. At this moment in time, there are more than 730 foreclosure sales listed in San Mateo County. This is shocking to me. I've lived in this county for more than 50 years. Never seen anything like it.

Where are we going?

 

BAILOUT THE BUMS

Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Bear Stearns, IndyMac,and so on and so on and on. Companies run by greedy and foolish management that squandered away fiscal resources, and now they throw themselves on the mercy of the taxpayers to rescue them from their stupidity. And more to come. Lehman Bros. sinking fast. Washington Mutual gone from flush to being flushed down the toilet, getting in line for WELFARE. (an aside; why is corporate welfare good and personal welfare bad?)

Back to the bailout. Where is all the money coming from to save the crooks and fools? Just imagine this! Bad debt covered by creating more debt. Most of it from overseas sources.

Here's one to stick in your craw. The head fools of Fannie and Freddie are due huge golden parachutes. How do you feel about being in debt to reward the scoundrels?

I suppose that if we don't like the debt we could pay it off. It's only $31,000 for every man, woman and child in the USA.

Can a Gentleman Win?

Barack Obama is a gentleman. He wants to continue to behave as a gentleman, or at least TRY to do so. HOWEVER, like a boxer who keeps getting hit low by his opponent without any intervention by the referee, there is only one thing to do before your opponent succeeds in emasculating you, and that is for every low blow you get, give 2 back and make them lower.

The Republicans, being the party of people who will sink to any depth, have no compunctions concerning the use of nasty talk, vile and false accusations, and character assassination.

So, like a boxer who is a gentleman out of the ring, but knows that to survive and win he must match his opponents dirty tactics by being fiercer, meaner, and as dirty as the contest forces him to be, Obama must hit back harder, and as low as need be.

The fate of our country may depend on this.

Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child's favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city. She is enormously popular; in every way she's like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won't vote for her can't quit smiling when talking about her because she is a "babe". It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months. She is "pro-life". She recently gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby. She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym. She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit. Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin's kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans. Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters. She's smart. Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents. During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign. Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a fiscal conservative. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents. The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn't even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later—to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing. While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once. These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city. As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state. In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today's surplus, borrow for needs. She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren't generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them. While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day. Sarah complained about the old boy's club when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal— loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State's top cop (see below). As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla's Police Chief because he intimidated her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska's top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it's pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn't fire her sister's ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit thatmore than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support. She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn't like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness. Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her. When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the old boys' club when she dramatically quit, exposing this man's ethics violations (for which he was fined). As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the bridge to nowhere after it became clear that it would be unwise not to. As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects—which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance—but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as anti-pork. She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative. Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her Sarah Barracuda because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah's mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her. As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as AGIA that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum. Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned as a private citizen against a state initiative that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State's lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior's decision to list polar bears as a threatened species. McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President. There have to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she. However, there are a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it. CLAIM VS FACT Hockey mom: true for a few years PTA mom: true years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since NRA supporter: absolutely true Social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this because it was unconstitutional). Pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to promote it. Pro-life: mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation Experienced: Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000. Political maverick: not at all Gutsy: absolutely! Open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions. Has a developed philosophy of public policy: no A Greenie: no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR. Fiscal conservative: not by my definition! Pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards. Pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents Pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla's history. Pro-labor/pro-union: No. Just because her husband works union doesn't make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union. WHY AM I WRITING THIS? First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny + Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations. Secondly, I've always operated in the belief that "Bad things happen when good people stay silent". Few people know as much as I do because few have gone to as many City Council meetings. Third, I am just a housewife. I don't have a job she can bump me out of. I don't belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future: that's life. Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah's attempt at censorship. Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable. CAVEATS I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor) from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of Wasilla, and I can't recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of City Hall—they are swamped. So I can't verify my numbers. You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my "about 5,000", up to 9,000. The day Palin's selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. MINE EYES HAVE SEEN

I am white and 75 years old.

I grew up in a small town in rural Virginia where Jim Crow laws were in full effect and rigorously enforced.

Public drinking fountains labeled "WHITE ONLY". Schools, "SEPARATE BUT EQUAL". Movie theaters, "NEGROS BALCONY ONLY". And, much more than many of you would believe.

In my late teens, I lived in a very old house in a small town in upstate New York. Try to imagine the journey from the rural south to this house. It had been a station on the "Underground Railroad" that gave runaway slaves shelter and sustenance on their way to Canada. Now, as I understand, there is a historical marker sign in front of this house describing it's history.

Something has occured that is hard to believe would happen in my lifetime. My party, the Democratic Party, has nominated for President of the United States, a person of color.

We shall overcome.

I just saw a poll that said 27% of Clinton supporters will vote for McCain. Truly, this very well illustrates the old expression, "cut off your nose to spite your face".

People do not understand "Commander in Chief".

The polls show that McCain has a wide lead over Obama as to whom is most qualified to be Commander in Chief.

My thoughts.

Naturally the polls show a majority of respondents believe McCain is the most qualified to be CiC. He had military experience. Obama has none.

Commander in Chief is a political position, not a military position. The founders of our country put it in the Constitution to give the civilian sector primacy over the military. The President controls the military, and constitutionally they must be subservient. The most famous example of this is when President Harry Truman fired General Douglas McArthur for insubordination.

An example of a great president that provided exemplery leadership is Franklin Delano Roosevelt during World War II. FDR had no military experience, but as a highly skilled politician and leader, he was part of the reason we prevailed over the Axis.

For instance: FDR was involved in choosing Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the European theater.

Eisenhower was a great General.

Roosevelt was a great President

The brilliance of mind, the range of vision and the soaring rhetoric of Barack Obama would be well balanced by Senator Joe Biden as his vice-presidential running mate. "Uncle Joe" as some of us like to call him has very long experience in the Senate and is known in many halls of power as a master of foreign affairs. When he speaks, you can "take it to the bank".

This could be a perfect match. Youth and age. Vision and pragmatism. Protestant and Catholic. Black and white. And most important, both very smart.

OK guys, you have the word now. Get busy!

John McCain, as a wealthy Republican has the sort of view of Social Security you would expect of one who married into lots of money. and cares not one little bit for we who have worked hard all our lives, paid into Social Security, saved money and retired with the hope the we could live out our lives in financial security.
If you are rich and have no need for Social Security, then John is your guy. If you have worked all your life, John has little use for you except for your vote.

Dubya is indulging in his usual sanctimonious hyerbole as he condemns Russia for their invasion of Georgia. Blather and horse pucky is about all he has left. He, fool that he is and all the fools that followed him into the disaster that is Iraq have gone far to turn the United States into a paper tiger. Did I say "paper"? All the U. S. debt "paper" held by foreign powers that we have used to finance the foolishness and stupidity of the past 8 years have turned us into a "paper" tiger, and come close to rendering us impotent in the face of aggressive military action by foreign powers.

Georgie boy, you looked into Putin's "soul", and now you are going to feel his "sole" as he kicks your backside.
