Recession, or Depression?

I heard some discussion on a TV news show this morning by 2 economists arguing whether we are in a recession of depression. Reminded me of the old saying: "It's a recession when your neighbor is out of work. It's a depression when you are out of work".

Brought to mind another saying about economists: "If you take all the world's economists and lay them end to end, they still won't reach a conclusion".

Thomas Carlyle, 19th century historian dubbed economics , the "DISMAL SCIENCE". Well put, Thomas.

Way back in the middle of the last century, I studied econ in college. Racked up about 15 units. Grim, really grim. Glad I didn't get into that line of work. Depressing, as in depression.

I don't know how close we are to the dividing line between recession and depression. Ask your out of work neighbor.

President Obama is signing executive orders to correct some of the problems left him by the Bush administration, Among these is Guantanamo, a stain on our national honor.
I hear that some of our honorable Senators and Congresspersons are complaining that Obama is jumping the gun by not giving them the opportunity to help handle the problems.
GIVE ME A BREAK!
These do-nothings have allowed vile situations to fester with little more than plaintive bleatings about the evil of it all. Obama is being decisive as he said he would. If Congress wants to truly be a co-equal branch of government, they need to step up and do right.

We, the voters, send these idiots to Sacramento to conduct the State's business in a timely and logical manner. They are most generously paid, and have perks and benefits fit for a king. So what gives? Why can't they do their job?

I spent many years working, sometimes pretty hard. I earned my pay. Paid my taxes. Paid my debts. I expect these clowns to do no less. Why should we, citizen taxpayers, be forced to pay for these fools to live like kings and goof off like bums.

If Harry goofs around long enough holding up the Burris appointment, the Illinois Republicans may get their way and have a special election to fill the Senate seat. If this should happen and the Repubs win the seat, Harry has thrown away a Demo vote.

The legislature of Illinois has voter 114-1 to impeach Gov. Blago. To some of us it seems that he has only played the game as it's been played for generations in Illinois.

HEAD OF CIA

Former Congressman George H W Bush was appointed head of the CIA in 1975 and served successfully for about 1 year. This being the case, how can anyone say that Leon Panetta is not qualified?

The agency needs a head that's politically savvy to bridge the gap between the spooks and the pols.

Leon is a smart guy. He'll do well.

Senate Swearing In
